Community Service Moral Excellence

Socks are the top clothing need for those experiencing homelessness. During the month of November, Westchester Country Day School is collecting new socks, small toiletries and hygiene items for care packages to be donated to local shelters.

This is a school-wide C.A.R.E.S. Crews initiative, which pairs students pre-K through 12th into groups that complete service learning projects together throughout the year. These projects are a hands-on component of the school's mission to promote student growth in moral character. C.A.R.E.S. stands for compassion, awareness, responsibility, empathy and service.

The WCDS Sock It to 'Em Sock and Toiletry Drive aims to put hygiene products and new socks in the hands and on the feet of men, women and children in need. The collection begins Nov. 7 and runs through Nov. 17. During a C.A.R.E.S. Crews Thanksgiving event on Dec. 18, older and younger students will work together to fill care packages with socks and toiletry items, which will then be distributed through community partners.

Donation bins for the WCDS Sock It to 'Em Sock and Toiletry Drive will be placed around Westchester’s campus. Throughout the weeks, the number of items donated by students will be recorded on sock cutouts in the Wilson Student Center, encouraging competition between the C.A.R.E.S. Crews. The crew that contributes the most items will receive a hot chocolate and cookie party.

The items requested for donation are as follows:

  • Men’s socks
  • Women’s socks
  • Children’s socks
  • Liquid hand soap (7-8 oz)
  • Bath soap
  • Lip balm
  • Shampoo (10-15 oz)
  • Body lotion (10-15 oz)
  • Toothbrushes
  • Toothpaste
  • Hand sanitizer (8 oz)

While these items may be small, they will make a big impact on those who don’t have regular access to clean socks and small toiletry items. For any questions or information, please contact Lauren Ingold at lauren.ingold@westchestercds.org or call 336.822.4007. Thank you for your support of this important initiative!
