Production All-School Event

Dr. Seuss' Cat in the Hat, Horton the Elephant, the Whos and other favorite characters are jumping off the page and onto the stage as Westchester Country Day School presents "Seussical Jr."

The community is invited to join the fun of this musical production performed by WCDS students in first through 12th grades. Performances will be held Friday, Nov. 10, through Sunday, Nov. 12, in Rives Hall on the WCDS campus at 2045 N. Old Greensboro Road, High Point, NC 27265. Show times are 7 p.m. on Friday and Saturday and 2 p.m. on Sunday.

The show is open to the public. Tickets are $8 each in advance on the school’s website at www.westchestercds.org/theatre or $10 cash at the door.

The cast includes more than 80 students led by seniors Maggie O’Keeffe as The Cat in the Hat, Liv Mueller as Mayzie La Bird, Morgan Elliott as Sour Kangaroo, and Jaden Richardson as Yertle the Turtle. The show also stars fifth grader Johanna English as JoJo, 10th grader Hadley Briggs as Horton the Elephant, and 11th grader Cooper Singer as Gertrude McFuzz.

"Seussical Jr." was conceived by Lynn Ahrens, Stephen Flaherty and Eric Idle and is based on the works of Dr. Seuss and "Seussical" the Broadway musical. The story combines Dr. Seuss's tales and many musical styles ranging from Latin to pop, swing to gospel, and R&B to funk.

The audience will be transported from the Jungle of Nool to the Circus McGurkus as the Cat in the Hat narrates the story of Horton the Elephant, who discovers a speck of dust containing tiny people called the Whos. Horton must protect the Whos from a world of naysayers and dangers, and he must also guard an abandoned egg that's been left in his care by the irresponsible Mayzie La Bird. Although Horton faces ridicule, danger and a trial, the intrepid Gertrude McFuzz never loses faith in him. Ultimately, the powers of friendship, loyalty, family and community are challenged and emerge triumphant.

Westchester theatre productions are designed and created by students, faculty, parents and volunteers. WCDS is presenting "Seussical Jr." through special arrangement with all authorized materials supplied by Music Theatre International.
