Seniors Announce College Athletics Plans

Three Westchester Country Day School seniors announced plans to continue their athletic participation at the collegiate level.

Sidney BriggsSidney Briggs will attend Wellesley College in Massachusetts, where she will join the rowing team. Briggs has been a team member with Triad United Rowing Association since 2016. In 2021, she and a teammate placed 15th in their race at the U.S. Rowing National Youth Regatta. In the fall, she was named to the Scholastic Honor Roll by U.S. Rowing. She also participated in athletics at Westchester as a member of Varsity Swimming. Briggs plans to study international relations, peace and justice studies, and Mandarin at Wellesley. She is the daughter of Dan and Laurie Briggs of Lexington.

Ben BublitzBen Bublitz will attend Bluefield State College in West Virginia, where he will join the track team. At Westchester, Bublitz was a member of the Varsity Track, Basketball and Cross Country teams. In the spring track season, he was a part of the conference champion 4 x 200 and 4 x 400 relay teams. He plans to study sports marketing at Bluefield State. He is the son of Jerry and Jill Bublitz of High Point.

Griffin PowellGriffin Powell will attend Greensboro College, where he will play basketball. Powell was a member of the Varsity Basketball team at Westchester. In his senior season, he was selected to the PTAC All-Conference Team and News & Record All-Area Basketball Team. He is the son of Colen and Robin Powell of Thomasville.

“These three have put in a tremendous amount of effort to make themselves great. I want to congratulate them [and their families] on the work, effort and sacrifice put into it,” said Adam Schwartz, director of athletics at Westchester. “At some point when they were younger, whether it was middle school or at 6 years old, there was a dream of playing college athletics. There are a lot of people who talk about it, and then there are a few, a small group that go out and do it … You are great teammates, you work really hard, and you have part of your dream right now that you’re going to play college athletics. We’re all very proud of you.”
