Faculty Award/Honor

Westchester Country Day School Athletic Director Adam Schwartz received the Chuck Carter Athletic Cup from the North Carolina Independent Schools Athletic Association at its annual athletic director conference.

The award is presented by the NCISAA each summer to a long-serving athletic director who embodies the association’s values. It is named in honor of Chuck Carter, a former NCISAA executive director and 2010 Hall of Fame member.

“This is a team award,” said Schwartz. “I love all the people I work with at WCDS. I’m proud of our coaches and student-athletes, and I’m thankful to the faculty for all they do in and out of the classroom to help the athletic program be successful.”

Schwartz came to Westchester in 2000 and has held various roles on the school faculty, including physical education teacher, coach, director of summer programming, director of alumni relations, and assistant athletic director. He became director of athletics in 2011 and currently leads a department of 25 Middle School and Varsity athletic teams in 10 sports. He continues to serve as head coach for Varsity Boys Soccer and Varsity Boys Golf.

Mary Keever, WCDS interim head of school, commended Schwartz for the professionalism, passion, and team focus he brings to the role.

“I met Adam Schwartz 23 years ago and was immediately struck by his zeal for education, sports and building community,” said Keever. “He takes his roles as leader and administrator seriously and supports his teammates. He shares his talents and time freely. He has won three soccer state championships, but his value and influence go far beyond the trophies. He leaves every place better than he found it.”

Schwartz’s contributions to WCDS include building an athletic program that supports the pillars of moral, academic, artistic and athletic excellence emphasized in the school’s mission. The commitment to academics has resulted in consistently high numbers of student-athletes being named Academic All-Conference.

In partnership with the school’s Booster Club, Schwartz has helped build a culture of sportsmanship and a positive atmosphere at games and events for players and families. He also has worked with faculty colleagues to balance scheduling to ensure students are able to participate in both the arts and athletics, and to make opportunities available for students with a range of experience and skill levels to participate.

His honors include leading teams to three state soccer championships and five golf team championships, as well as receiving multiple coaching awards.
