Dear Westchester Family,

Listen Learn ActSince our initial communication this summer, the leadership of the Board of Trustees and the school administration have been working diligently to develop an action plan to create a more inclusive school community.

We have also heard the voices of our community who have shared their experiences of racial injustice and discrimination. We deeply respect and honor their stories and the courage to share these difficult events with us. These voices have steeled our resolve to work to build a more just, equitable, and inclusive community at our school.

We understand the reality of engaging in a journey of continuous learning as well as continuous action. We acknowledge and look forward to engaging in understanding our implicit biases and blind spots and learning about infusing culturally responsive practices in and out of the classroom.

We have established a relationship with Jada Monica Drew, a local diversity consultant with experience in independent schools around the state who will work alongside our school community. With her guidance and advice, along with a continued focus on our mission, we have begun the work of critical analysis, introspection, and immediate action.

To our students, families, and alumni, we hear you and commit ourselves to this important work. We welcome the WCDS community to listen, learn and act with us on this journey. Thank you for sharing your experiences and supporting us in pursuit of our mission’s goal to “cultivate informed citizens who are ready for a rapidly changing world.”

Sincerely,

Cobb Atkinson,
Head of School

Jamie Collins,
President, Board of Trustees
