Before/After School Care
At Westchester Country Day School, we pride ourselves on the community and family-like feel of our school, and that extends seamlessly into the Before- and After-School Care program and beyond.
We offer both Before-School and After-School Care options to support our families and provide additional enrichment opportunities for our students. For the safety of our children, all PK-8 students who are on campus before 8:00 a.m. or after 3:00 p.m. must be supervised by an adult.
Before-School Care
Westchester offers Before-School Care from 7:00-7:45 a.m. for $7 per day. Students should report to the Wilson Center upon arrival. Mrs. Becky Turner is the Before-School Care director.
After-School Care
After-School Care is available from the end of the school day until 5:45 p.m. Monday-Thursday and 5:30 p.m. on Friday for $7 per hour. Parents may pick up their children from the playground or Wilson Student Center. No advance registration is required. Students may attend on an as-needed basis, and families will be billed. Ms. Amy Schenck is the After-School Care director.
Our After-School Program provides an ideal time and place to help our students develop both social and interpersonal skills in a safe and friendly environment. The staff engage students in fun, age-appropriate play and activities that allow them to unwind from a busy day, build self-confidence through flexibility and student choice, and nurture teamwork and friendship with other students.
Sample After-School Itinerary
- Outdoor play (weather permitting)
- Snack
- Homework, board games, hands-on activities, movie
- Free-choice activity or storytime
After-School Contact
If you need to reach the After-School Care program after office hours (between 4-6 p.m.), call the After School mobile phone at 336.890.0892.
Study Zone
Study Zone is a quiet, supervised study environment from 3:00-3:45 p.m. for students in grades 3-8. The fee for this service is the same hourly rate as the After-School program.
- Middle School students who are staying after school and are not with a faculty member or in a sport or activity should report directly to the Study Zone upon dismissal.
- Parents of Lower School students in Grades 3-5 who wish for their child to attend Study Zone must communicate these preferences to their child’s teacher on a weekly basis. Otherwise, students will be sent to the After-School program upon dismissal.
Note that this is a quiet environment for students to complete homework assignments, and the students must be independent with most of their work. In the event that your child needs more individualized help with homework, ask about the Homework Helper service.
Lower School After-School Electives
Additional after-school electives and clubs are offered to Lower School students throughout the year. These may include activities such as Odyssey of the Mind, robotics, art and GOFAR running club (some programs require an additional registration fee). In the arts, Lower School students may participate in Footnotes, an after-school choir for grades 3-5, or the fall or spring musical productions, for which rehearsals are held after school. Information on how to sign up is included in the school’s weekly emails.
Middle School After-School Options
Middle School students are encouraged to participate in our athletic program with practices that last until 4:00 p.m. Monday-Thursday for a variety of sports offered in three seasons. Students are also encouraged to participate in theatre productions or the WCDS School of Music. Once practices end, if students need to remain on campus, they go to the Study Zone (3:00-3:45 p.m.) or the After-School Care program (after 3:45 p.m.).
