Second Grade Students Become Songwriters
Second grade students at Westchester Country Day School celebrated the release of their new song, "In the Spring," with a music video watch party during music class.
The students became songwriters, instrumentalists, and vocalists in a special music production unit led by music teacher Andy McGeagh. With the support of local singer-songwriter Ashley Virginia, students co-wrote their original song about springtime and brought it to life through collaborative lyric writing, melody development, and instrumental performance. The class learned to play supporting bass lines on piano, chord progressions on ukulele, and auxiliary percussion. The students recorded their vocals and instruments using Logic Pro, a professional audio engineering software and a studio space created on campus.
"This unique and deeply creative project was made possible by generous funding from Friends of the Fine Arts, with additional support from the Lower School, to ensure our guest artist was compensated fairly," said McGeagh. "We are so proud of our second graders for their creativity, teamwork, and musicianship."
The song was first performed at the school's ArtsFest in April and is now available as a video featuring the studio recording overlaid with footage of the students’ rehearsal and recording process.
