Single Hero

Welcome to Summer Camps at Westchester! We are excited to build, run, create, discover and have fun with you.

About Westchester Camps
Summer camps at Westchester provide opportunities for students to learn new skills and build friendships in a fun, safe and nurturing environment. Camps are open to all children in the Piedmont Triad!
Camp sessions are led by WCDS faculty members, coaches, volunteers and community partners. Some camps are assisted by student volunteers. The camp coordinator is also on campus to facilitate arrival and departure each day and ensure the safety and well-being of all campers.
- Most camp sessions are week-long, half-day programs. There are morning and afternoon camps offered so students can stay all day. Some athletic camps are offered at night.
- Check-in begins daily 15 minutes prior to the start of camp.
- All campers are expected to bring a snack and water bottle each day.
- Campers who are staying for the full day need to pack a lunch. Pizza is provided on Fridays for students attending afternoon camps on site.

MAD SCIENCE is coming to Westchester by popular demand! Grab your spot before it's too late! Take a trip into the galaxy! Campers will learn about the history of space travel and how some space vehicles work. They will use stomp rockets, water rockets and engine powered rockets to explore the physics of flight. This camp will introduce children to and show them how amazing our Milky Way is. Leave camp with your own rocket. Our camp includes everything your child needs during our camp day. However, if you wish to continue your child’s interest in rocket launches outside our camp, you will need to purchase a launch kit at a hobby shop. These are only a sample of some of the activities that we will be doing each day. The topics will not necessarily follow this order. However, each of these topics will be included at some point in the camp. The Milky Way – What is the Milky Way and how do we know what’s up there? Children will explore the celestial sphere, learn about celestial navigation, and jump into the history of space travel. Begin construction on a Mad Science model rocket to keep! Galaxy Quest - Make your own sundial as you discover what the universe has to do with telling time. Campers also build a galactic mobile while discovering the wonders of our solar system. They will finish construction on their Mad Science rocket. Astronaut Training - Navigate the skies when building your own sextant. Next, take a waltz with the planets! Rockin’ Rocketry - Build a model Saturn to take home. Children will master the concept of rocket staging by operating their own staging exercises. Discover the universe as you build your own planisphere to take home with you, and start work on a fun flying fizzler. Rocketry in Space - Campers continue to explore the amazing Milky Way. They will build their own blast off racer, finish their flying fizzler, and complete this awesome week with a real Mad Science rocket launch!

MAD SCIENCE is coming to Westchester by popular demand! Grab your spot before it's too late! A camp for Inventors! Children will overcome a series of challenges using basic materials, simple machines, tips from famous inventors and the most important of all – their mind. With a little bit of ingenuity children will create aircrafts, construct working light sticks to take home and assemble a set of circuits with batteries and light bulbs. While Thomas Edison said "invention is 10% inspiration and 90% perspiration", this camp is 100% FUN! These are only a sample of some of the activities that we will be doing each day. The topics will not necessarily follow this order. However, each of these topics will be included at some point in the camp. Whiz Kidz – Team up with your fellow camp inventors to explore the inventions of others – such as kids, women, and more. Draw inspiration from the “wacky” and the practical! Children work together to form circuits and recreate Tesla's bright atmosphere for the 1893 World's Fair. They talk about sound and learn that anyone—a child, woman, or man—can be an inventor. The goal of this camp day is to understand that we have no limitations. Our dreams will inspire invention. Invention Nation – Inventing means practicality! Inventions and patents to protect an invention were very popular in the late 1800s. Inventors Alexander Graham Bell, Thomas Edison and Nikola Tesla were locked in several battles over electrical inventions of their era. The class moves from simple devices to Rube Goldberg devices and the children perform as parts of a complex human-machine. Prepare a patent proposal and receive a patent certificate at the end of the camp day. Think Fast - Inventors have always searched for a way to take flight. On today’s journey we will use early inventors like the Wright brothers to launch into the wild blue yonder. Orville and Wilbur Wright worked together to develop the first self-controlled motorized flying machine. Their team efforts also lead to improved bicycle pedals and faster sleds. Children review technological advances in flight and work together to produce improved paper plane designs. Take flight during this fun-flying camp day. Science Fiction - Inventing means dreaming! Campers dive in to the exploration of what could be on this fantastic day where science fiction meets science fact! As far back as Jules Verne (and further), dreamers have explored what the future can hold. Many of those dreams are now reality. Sci-fi meets real inventors to help us explore how fiction can influence reality. The children develop submarines that rise or sink, decipher fact from fiction, and play a future-based bingo game. Infinity and Beyond – Join the adventure to infinity and beyond with Isaac Asimov and George Lucas, who wrote about things that would be available in the future. These science fiction writers developed the reality of their current technology into future possibilities. Future inventors get a lesson on lasers and build their own light stick. The camp wraps up with a robotic relay and the children take home dreams of the future and new planets to explore.

MAD SCIENCE is coming to Westchester by popular demand! Grab your spot before it's too late! This camp puts children on a “deserted island” on which they must work together to devise a means for collecting food and water, build shelters, bridges, and learn about the science behind survival fun! They use the tools at hand to write messages to send in a bottle and witness a volcanic eruption. The children eventually design a means to escape the island and come home. These are only a sample of some of the activities that we will be doing each day. The topics will not necessarily follow this order. However, each of these topics will be included at some point in the camp. Shipwrecked – Imagine finding yourself on a deserted island with only a few supplies. What better way to inspire your own creations? Add into the day a tsunami and see how resourceful you can be using Ben Franklin’s inventions as inspiration. Rock Paper Scissors – Investigate the awesome innovations created before modern science had really begun. Learn about Leonardo da Vinci and discover how his ideas predicted future inventions that can help us on the island. Build tools to both enjoy and to help with escape, including a harmonica and dragonfly helicopter! Build a bridge to help explore the island, start work on a fort to live in, and create a means of protection for your new camp! Forts and Flingers – Explore catapults, trebuchets, and more amazing inventions during this action packed camp day. Protect camp while working on your fort and design different flying and flinging devices, including your own flying dragon! Practice your skills of observation. Race to Space – Why settle for just a message in a bottle? Campers take flight on this exciting day! From hot air balloons to rockets, the adventure starts on the ground and travels into space. Step into space by launching self-built rockets and loading a payload capsule puzzle. Escape from Shipwreck Island – Witness a volcano erupt and see who will be the captain’s first mate for escape! Build another bridge so you can scout the island for the best place to take off. Campers work on a sail boat as they explore ideas for escaping the island to safety!
