Head of School Mary Keever

Mary Keever, Head of School at Westchester Country Day School, stands outside of Kester Hall.

Mrs. Mary Keever has been a Wildcat for more than 25 years. Her adventures began when she applied for a development position at Westchester, but upon the committee hearing she had an English education certification, she was invited to interview for an opening in the Middle School. Only 10 minutes into the teaching demonstration, she knew she was in the right place.

Mrs. Keever first joined Westchester in 1999 as a language arts/literature teacher. Throughout the years, she contributed to the school community in a variety of ways, including athletic coaching, and took on additional leadership roles, including Middle School dean of faculty and coordinator for the school's 2017 reaccreditation.

"I developed my craft and skill as a teacher in the classrooms of Kester Hall under the guidance of my mentor, Freddie Kirkman, who set the standard of the ultimate educator," she said. "The Westchester family encouraged and supported me as I embarked on the joys of marriage and parenthood. I am forever grateful that every administrator allowed me to prioritize my family life while also encouraging me to develop leadership skills."

Mrs. Keever was head of Middle School from 2012-2023, when she was named interim head of school for the 2023-2024 school year.

"Serving as interim head of school surpassed my expectations and provided new joys daily as I became immersed in all aspects of Wildcat Nation. I am blessed to serve alongside such talented administration and staff while engaging with students from pre-K to 12th grade and their families and working together with our Board of Trustees."

She holds a Bachelor of Arts in English from Wofford College, a Master of Education in reading from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, and certifications as an N.C. Certified Teacher of English and Reading Specialist and in Secondary School Education.

Mrs. Keever's family members are also Wildcats through and through. She and her husband, Wes, are High Point residents who have established roots of involvement and connection within the community. Their two children attended Westchester from kindergarten through graduation: Dory Keever '21 and Abby Keever '24.

I am filled with gratitude for the position our Wildcat Nation holds. We have a strong academic curriculum, quality athletic, arts and extracurricular programs, the best faculty team you could find anywhere, and supportive families that partner with us in preparing their children for each next step. Even in recent years when schools faced the challenges of the pandemic, at Westchester, we worked together to think creatively, collaborate flexibly and educate patiently. Thank you for the opportunity to learn and grow together.
