Thank you for your interest in Westchester Country Day School. The application process is designed to provide the best possible opportunity for a student and his or her family to understand Westchester. This process also enables the faculty and the Admission Committee to understand each student and determine whether Westchester’s program can meet the student’s needs. The application process is not complete until the school receives all of the following (click for more information):
Application and Fee
A completed application must be on file with the Admissions Department. A non-refundable fee of $75 must accompany each application for admission.
Students applying to grades PK-5 should provide two evaluation forms (see links at left) to current, most recent teachers, or teacher's assistants.
Middle & Upper School
Students applying for grades 6-12 should provide three evaluation forms (see link at left) to a current or most recent English teacher, math teacher, and a third teacher of the student's choice.
Transcripts and Report Cards
Please provide current or prior school transcripts and report cards for the past two academic years. Feel free to include any additional information that you have.
Rising Pre-K students are expected to be 4 by August 1st of the intended school year. For rising Pre-K students, the Gesell Development Observation is administered to determined developmental readiness. The Admissions Office will contact all applicants to arrange these times.
Rising Kindergarten students are expected to be 5 by August 1st of the intended school year. For rising Kindergarten students, the Gesell Developmental Observation Assessment and the Brigance Early Childhood Developmental Inventory are individually administered to determine developmental and academic readiness. The Admissions Office will contact all applicants to arrange these times.
Grades 1 and 2
For rising first and second grade students, the Phonological Awareness Literacy Screening (PALS) is administered. PALS is designed to measure children’s knowledge of important literacy fundamentals and can be used as a diagnostic tool to provide teachers with explicit information to help guide their teaching. The Admissions Office will contact all applicants to arrange these times.
For applicants to grades 3-12, Educational Records Bureau (ERB) Comprehensive Testing Program is utilized. The ERB examines the student's performance in reading comprehension and math. An essay is also given to assess the student's writing ability. The topic is appropriate to the grade level. The Admissions Office will contact all applicants to arrange these times.
The student's family is asked to visit Westchester; in addition, Lower, Middle and Upper School students are encouraged to shadow during the school day with a current student. The Admissions Office will help arrange school visits. To schedule a visit or for more information, please contact the Admissions Office at 336.822.4005.
These requirements may be completed in any order. The Admission Committee, consisting of administrators and faculty, will review completed applications. The first round of Pre-Kindergarten and Kindergarten acceptances will be mailed in early February, and all other acceptances will be on a rolling basis. In cases where there are more qualified candidates than spaces, qualified candidates will be put into a pool of acceptable applicants waiting for spots to become available. Admission decisions will be based on the needs of each class and the best interest of the school. Consideration will be given to the following: students with exceptional abilities and talents, children of full-time faculty, qualified students for whom a spot was not available the previous year, siblings of students currently enrolled, children of alumni, or students offering ethnic and cultural diversity or gender balance. The process is designed to help the school evaluate candidates, therefore enhancing the possibilities for proper acceptance and placement decisions.
To schedule a visit or for more information, please contact the Admissions Office at 336.822.4005.
