In Lower School we offer an integrated curriculum that teaches children to think. Our language arts program emphasizes higher level thinking by teaching the skills of organizing, integrating, comparing and contrasting, as well as interpretive and evaluative thinking. There is extensive exposure to reading as well as an emphasis on writing and responding orally. Our new math series by Scott Foresman stresses mental and symbolic arithmetic, measurement, geometry, and collecting and using data. Children learn scientific method and reasoning skills through progressive study of science units. Social studies begins with the study of the world around us and progresses to learning about North Carolina and United States history.
At Westchester, we believe that academics, although very important, are only part of a student's education. We care about the total development of the child – morally, socially, emotionally, physically, and artistically. All of our Lower School children are enriched by activities outside of the classroom. Each week, children attend classes in music, art, library, computers, Spanish, Mandarin Chinese, and physical education. A guidance counselor is available to all of our children and classroom guidance is offered monthly. After school programs include violin classes, guitar and piano lessons, dance, chorus, and small group study hall.
As educators, we have the tremendous opportunity to become partners with parents in raising the children who will become our future leaders.
