Our Values

As its students grow through knowledge, self-discovery, and confidence, Westchester Country Day prepares them in ways that will enrich their lives, the community, and the world. The school offers an environment that equips students not only with the core knowledge and character education appropriate to their developmental stages, but also with tools for learning they can rely on long after graduation. Determined to produce informed citizens for a rapidly changing world, Westchester Country Day seeks to prepare students who view the acquisition and wise use of knowledge as a life-long joy.

Westchester Country Day believes:
  • incorporating teamwork, partnerships, encouragement, trust, and understanding into all aspects of school life creates a family environment which all community members cherish.
  • allowing students to express ideas without fear of criticism – and valuing the worth of the individual and his or her contributions – encourages all students to appreciate and celebrate differences.
  • providing students with tools for achieving moral, academic, artistic, and athletic confidence and excellence – and requiring that they use those tools to the best of their ability – creates a shared sense of responsibility among students, coaches, and teachers.
  • taking advantage of every opportunity in the classroom, in extracurricular activities, on the playing field, and in the community is the most effective method of teaching the ideals of honesty, respect, and compassion.
  • adhering to a written Honor Code encourages students to think about choices, consequences, and the importance of decision making.
  • presenting material in a variety of ways that accommodate different learning styles provides students with the basic skills, study habits, and academic growth.
  • encouraging students to value the process as well as the product of a learning experience prepares them more thoroughly for life beyond school.
  • providing opportunities for students to serve the school community, through student government, clubs, and activities – and to serve the community at large, through student service projects – instills a sense of responsibility and compassion.
  • giving students an opportunity for success with individual attention and encouragement prepares them for a lifetime of self-reliance, confidence, and service.
